With interplanetary exploration increasing, and new found stability on the first human non-terran settlements, the flow of supplies to these colonies from Earth had been slowing considerably. But with the costs of interstellar travel increasing and the competition steep, the flow of resources from Earth to Mars had not only stopped, but had started to reverse.
With so few resources and the worry of a disaster, martians did not take lightly to this reversed flow of resource support. While disagreements may have started small, the indignation that came from terrans that martians wouldn’t ‘repay the favour they were given’ grew, and unrest on Mars at the prospect of losing what few resources were available led to stark disagreements.
Fast forward to a ‘Boston Tea’ style riot where a shipment of supplies heading from Mars to Earth was attacked and destroyed to chants of ‘Burn not Return!’ In a very unfortunate event, riots that started small grew out of control and ended in complete disaster. Fires that had started on a launch pad travelled too close to a fueling station and ended in the complete destruction of an entire sub-colony ‘salting the earth’ so to say.
Intensive peace agreements followed and a new, brighter path, was forged out of ‘The Fires of Tuck Station’.
