The London deep-level shelters are eight deep-level air-raid shelters that were built under London Underground stations during World War II. Each shelter consists of a pair of parallel tunnels 16 feet 6 inches (5.03 m) in diameter and 1,200 feet (370 m) long. Each tunnel is subdivided into two decks, and each shelter was designed to hold up to 8,000 people. The main entrance is locked up tight and most people ignore it. Ste found one of the emergency escape exits 30m up the tunnel from the Camden Town tube station. He waits until no one is looking and slips off the platform and down the tunnel. Of course he has to time it when there isn’t a train coming, but there is (just barely) enough room to flatten himself between the tunnel supports if one comes unexpectedly. The shelter is still connected to the London underground's power grid. After replacing a few lights, cleaning out some old rusted and collapsed bunks, Ste turned it into his secret hideout where he could flee when things got too bad with his father. The only other person who knows of its existence is Jamie. The two of them "relax" here. Ste has furnished it with castoffs he has salvaged from tips (dumpsters).
